Ik wil

Jean-Louis Forain Tightrope Walker, c.1885, oil on canvas, the Art Institute of Chicago. The street performance depicted in Tightrope Walker was one among many that circled  Paris at the end of the 19th century. Forain’s night-time Paris was a place where workers and bourgeois,  civilians and soldiers, men and women were all mixed in the dark. Forain isolated the balancing figure and made a strict compositional separation between the realms of illusion (the performer) and realit:
